Quick answer

What can a crypto scam investigation in Idaho actually do?

It preserves the evidence, maps each transfer on the public blockchain to the wallets and exchanges that received it, and identifies the people or platforms involved where lawful sources allow. The resulting file supports police reports, exchange freeze requests made through counsel or law enforcement, and civil claims. Our Idaho scam investigators also handle non-crypto fraud.

01What the Attorney General reported

How Crypto Scams Are Reaching Idaho Victims

In a September 2025 warning, Idaho Attorney General Raúl Labrador said reported cryptocurrency losses in the state rose from $19 million in 2023 to more than $35 million in 2024, with seniors the largest group of victims. Twin Falls and Magic Valley families report the same patterns to our Twin Falls investigators. The schemes usually start with a call, text or email from someone posing as tech support, a bank or a government agency. Families in the capital region often reach us through our Boise investigators after a relative has already sent money.

The Attorney General's release described victims being told to put cash into crypto ATMs, which look like ordinary bank machines and sit in gas stations and convenience stores. It also recounted a Boise convenience store employee who stopped two seniors from losing more than $30,000 combined. Investment platforms, romance contacts and fake job offers follow different scripts but end at the same place: a wallet the victim does not control. Our elder scam investigations address the cases where an older Idahoan was the target.

02State law in 2026

Idaho's Crypto Kiosk Bill and Why It Matters to Your Case

In 2026 the Legislature passed Senate Bill 1359, a Virtual Currency Kiosk Fraud Prevention Act that would have capped transactions for new customers and required fraud warnings and certain refunds. Press reports state that Governor Brad Little vetoed it in April 2026, citing drafting problems. As a result, we are not aware of an Idaho statute specific to crypto kiosks, and victims generally rely on general fraud, theft and consumer protection law. Counsel can confirm the current position, and our Idaho attorney investigation support works under their direction.

That matters because a kiosk operator's own policies, receipts and compliance records become central evidence. Operators that move money are generally regulated as money transmitters, and they keep transaction logs, identity checks and camera footage at the machine. Counsel or police can request that information, sometimes alongside stalking investigations when the scammer also harasses the victim; we identify the operator, the machine location and the precise transaction details so the request is specific. The same records approach supports our Idaho stolen asset investigations when funds move through other channels.

03The public ledger

Following the Money on the Blockchain

Most major cryptocurrencies record every transfer on a public ledger. With a wallet address or transaction ID from a kiosk receipt or an app screenshot, an investigator can follow the funds through intermediate wallets and see when they reach a known exchange or service. That point matters, because regulated exchanges collect identity information and can freeze accounts when properly asked. Our asset investigation methods and blockchain review work together when a judgment is the goal.

Tracing has limits we explain up front. Mixers, privacy coins, cross-chain bridges and offshore exchanges can break or blur the trail, and only law enforcement or a court order can compel an exchange to disclose who owns an account. We do not hack, access accounts without authorization or pretend to be anyone. What we deliver is a clear map of the transfers with addresses, amounts and timestamps, prepared so police, a prosecutor or your attorney can act on it quickly. Our OSINT research team adds the public online footprint of the people involved.

04Investment, romance and impostor schemes

The Crypto Scams We See Most Often in Idaho

Fake investment platforms show a growing balance on a polished website or app while the deposits go straight to the scammer. Withdrawal requests trigger new fees and taxes. Romance schemes, sometimes called pig butchering, build trust for weeks before introducing an investment. Impostor schemes demand payment to settle a supposed warrant, tax bill or compromised bank account. Each pattern leaves different evidence, and unmarried partner investigations sometimes uncover the same accounts. People who met the contact online often request a dating background check before or after the money moves.

Threat-based schemes are different again. A scammer may claim to have compromising images and demand crypto to stay quiet. Idaho Code § 18-6710 makes threatening or harassing electronic communications a misdemeanor, and a felony for a second or later offense, while § 18-6605 addresses distributing intimate images to harass or humiliate. Victims should not pay, should keep every message and should report to police. Our Idaho cyberbullying and online harassment investigations document the account activity behind those threats.

05Police, the FBI and the state

Reporting a Crypto Scam and What Happens Next

Report the loss to local police or the sheriff, to the FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center and to the Idaho Attorney General through its Report Scams Idaho page. Contact the exchange or kiosk operator immediately in writing. Speed matters because funds sitting at an exchange can sometimes be frozen if law enforcement acts before they move again. Under Idaho Code § 18-2407, property taken by false pretenses or extortion worth more than $1,000 is generally grand theft, and prosecutors decide what to charge.

Police departments receive many of these reports and often lack time to trace every transfer. A victim who arrives with a complete timeline, the transfer map and copies of every message makes the case easier to assign and pursue. We prepare that package and stay available to the detective, much as we do for missing person skip tracing cases. When identity information was also taken, Idaho Code § 18-3126 addresses misappropriation of personal identifying information, and our lost contact and identity locates help find witnesses who dealt with the same contact.

06The second scam

Beware of Anyone Promising to Recover Your Crypto for a Fee

Victims are often contacted again by someone claiming to be a recovery firm, a lawyer or a government agency that can retrieve the lost funds for an upfront fee. These offers are frequently run by the same people or by groups that buy victim lists. Delator Group does not promise recovery and does not charge to get money back. We document, trace and support the people with legal power to freeze and seize funds. Families who want an independent opinion can ask our investigative consultants to review the offer before paying anything.

Warning signs include guarantees, requests for payment in more crypto, pressure to act today, claims of special access to blockchain records and websites registered only weeks earlier. We check domain registration history, business filings and online reviews and tell you what we find in writing. If the recovery offer came through a social media account or a messaging app, the same public-source research that supports our background checks on business partners applies.

07Counsel and the courts

Civil Options When the People Behind the Scam Can Be Identified

Most crypto fraud is run from overseas, and some losses cannot be recovered. When a participant is in the United States, such as a money mule who received and forwarded funds or a local seller who set up an account, a civil claim may be possible. Idaho Code § 5-218 generally allows three years for fraud claims, typically measured from discovery of the facts. Counsel decides whether a claim is worth bringing. Our Idaho guide on investigator costs helps families compare costs against realistic outcomes.

Where a defendant in Idaho is identified, we locate them, research assets that might satisfy a judgment and coordinate service of a summons in Idaho with logged attempts and a signed affidavit. Business victims who lost funds through an employee or vendor may also need an internal review of controls; our Idaho corporate espionage investigators handle cases involving insiders, and every report is written to stand up in court.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Can a private investigator get my crypto back?

No honest investigator can promise that. What we can do is preserve the evidence, trace the funds to the exchanges or services that received them and give police and counsel a file that supports a freeze or seizure. Recovery depends on how quickly the funds are located, where they went and whether law enforcement or a court acts.

I put cash into a crypto ATM after a phone call. What now?

Stop all further payments, keep the receipt and call police. Notify the kiosk operator in writing using the contact information on the machine or receipt, and report to the FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center and the Idaho Attorney General. Then call us so the transaction can be traced while the trail is fresh. Our Idaho elder fraud investigators help when a parent or grandparent was targeted.

Does Idaho have a law regulating crypto ATMs?

In 2026 the Legislature passed Senate Bill 1359 to regulate virtual currency kiosks, but press reports state the Governor vetoed it in April 2026. We are not aware of an Idaho kiosk-specific statute now in force, so victims generally rely on general fraud, theft and consumer law. An attorney can confirm the current law.

How does blockchain tracing work?

Most cryptocurrencies record transfers on a public ledger. Starting from a wallet address or transaction ID, we follow funds through intermediate wallets until they reach an identifiable exchange or service. We do not access private accounts. Exchanges disclose account owners only to law enforcement or under a court order, which is why our report is written for those audiences.

What does a crypto scam investigation cost in Idaho?

Scam investigations carry a $2,000 minimum, with additional hours at $100. We tell you up front what tracing is likely to show, so you can decide whether the cost makes sense compared with the loss. The scope and total are approved in writing before work begins. See our Idaho investigation pricing for every rate.

Someone says they can recover my money for a fee. Is it real?

Treat it with great suspicion. Recovery scams target people who have already lost money, often using lists of prior victims. Guarantees, upfront fees, requests for more crypto and newly registered websites are warning signs. We can review the offer and tell you in writing what we find before you pay anyone.

Is it a crime in Idaho to trick someone into sending crypto?

Taking property by false pretenses or extortion can be theft, and under Idaho Code § 18-2407 property worth more than $1,000 is generally grand theft. Threatening electronic messages may violate § 18-6710. Police and prosecutors decide on charges. Our job is to give them a clear, sourced account of what happened.

Will you contact the scammer?

Generally, no. Contacting the scammer can tip them off, prompt them to move funds or expose you to more pressure. Any contact we recommend is coordinated with police or counsel first. We never pose as law enforcement. Our guide to legal PI methods in Idaho explains the lines we do not cross.

Can you help a business that lost crypto through an employee?

Yes. Insider losses involve access logs, approvals, devices and interviews as well as blockchain tracing. We investigate how the loss happened, who had access and whether controls failed, then write findings for management and counsel. Companies often follow up with a compliance audit of their payment controls and an employee theft review.

How long do I have to bring a civil claim?

Idaho Code § 5-218 generally allows three years for fraud claims, usually measured from discovery of the facts. Your attorney should confirm the deadline for your case. Practical deadlines are much shorter, because funds move quickly and exchange records are easier to obtain early. Starting the investigation promptly protects every option.
