Hotel Surveillance Investigations in Idaho

One overnight stay can answer a question that weeks of suspicion cannot. Delator Group documents who checks in, who joins them, how long they stay and when they leave, at Idaho resorts, downtown hotels, interstate motels and lake lodging. Investigators work only from lobbies, lots and other public areas, with the plan priced in writing.

Quick answer

Is hotel surveillance legal in Idaho?

Generally yes, when the investigator stays in areas open to the public and never enters, looks into or records inside a guest room. Idaho's video voyeurism statute, trespass law and eavesdropping statute set the limits, and an investigator must leave a property when management asks. Our Idaho surveillance professionals work within those rules at $100 per hour.

01Where it happens

Ski Resorts, Lake Hotels, Downtown Towers and Interstate Motels

Idaho's lodging falls into a few distinct types, and each changes how hotel surveillance investigations are planned. Sun Valley, the resort Union Pacific opened in 1936 beside Ketchum, anchors a Wood River Valley lodging market reached by SH 75 and served by Friedman Memorial Airport in Hailey. In the Panhandle, The Coeur d'Alene Resort sits on the lake with a busy marina, and our Coeur d'Alene hotel investigators know its lots, docks and approaches.

Downtown Boise hotels serve Capitol visitors, conventions, university guests and business travelers, often with structured parking and several entrances that make a departure easy to miss. Our Boise surveillance team studies each property's exits before the first shift. Along I-84, interchange motels in towns such as Mountain Home and Glenns Ferry serve people who rarely stay more than a night, and our Mountain Home investigators cover the Elmore County stops. I-15 motels around Blackfoot and Idaho Falls play the same role in the east.

What an Idaho Hotel Stay Record Includes

A complete record follows the subject from before the hotel to after it. An investigator picks the subject up at home, work or the airport, notes the vehicle and any companion, and logs the arrival and whether luggage comes out. Inside public areas such as a lobby, restaurant or bar, the investigator records who the subject meets and for how long. Out in the lot, the log notes every time a vehicle leaves or returns during the stay. No photograph is ever taken into a room, even one visible from the lot.

The departure often carries the most weight. Two people leaving a motel together in the morning, in the vehicle that arrived the night before, is clearer than any lobby photograph. Our investigators record that exit in sequence, with time-stamped stills and a plain-language log. When the stay is part of an affair, the file supports our Idaho married infidelity investigations, and when the companion is unknown, a $102 basic or $300 deep-dive check through our companion identification research names them lawfully.

03Legal limits

Voyeurism, Trespass and Recording Laws at Idaho Lodging

Idaho law protects people inside a guest room, and we treat that protection as absolute. Idaho Code § 18-6605, the video voyeurism statute renumbered from § 18-6609 in 2022, generally makes it a felony to use or install an imaging device where a person has a reasonable expectation of privacy without their consent for the purposes the statute lists. A hotel room is the clearest example. Our summary of Idaho investigator limits covers related rules.

Hotels are also private property. Under § 18-7008, remaining on property after the owner or an agent tells you to leave is a trespass, so if management asks us to leave a lobby or lot, we go immediately and continue from a public street if possible. We never pose as staff, ask employees for guest information or record conversations in lobbies and bars, which Idaho's eavesdropping statute, § 18-6702, can make a felony. Our guide to recording someone in Idaho explains the consent rule.

Guest Records, Rule 45 Subpoenas and What the Evidence Proves

Guest registers, folios and key-card logs belong to the hotel. When counsel needs them in a pending case, the usual route is a subpoena. Under I.R.C.P. 45, any person at least 18 years old who is not a party may serve one, and one day's attendance fee and mileage must be tendered at service if requested. Hearing and trial subpoenas may be served anywhere in Idaho. Delator Field Services coordinates that service through our Idaho subpoena service team, and our Idaho family law attorney support helps counsel decide whether the records add anything.

The evidence itself has several uses. In an Idaho divorce, adultery remains a ground under Idaho Code § 32-603 and fault is a spousal maintenance factor under § 32-705, while hotel charges paid from community funds may come up when property is discussed. In custody disputes the question is narrower: whether the stay affected the child's stability or care under the factors in § 32-717. Our Idaho custody investigation guide explains how that evidence tends to be weighed, and we keep children out of photographs.

05Business and insurance

Lodging Coverage for HR Teams, Adjusters and Defense Counsel

Employers use hotel coverage to answer narrow questions. Did the regional manager attend the Boise training the company paid for, or spend those nights somewhere else? Is a departing executive meeting a competitor at an airport hotel? The technique does not change for a business client: public-area observation, logged by the minute and backed by photographs. Our Idaho employee conduct surveillance handles the HR side of those files.

Insurers and self-insured employers ask a different question: does a claimant's resort trip match the restrictions they reported? A claimant who reports a disabling back injury and then spends a weekend skiing at Sun Valley or loading a boat on Lake Pend Oreille may be within their limits or far outside them. We document the activity without interpreting it medically. Carrier files run through our insurance claim surveillance service, and injured-worker files through our workers' comp surveillance investigators.

06Seasons

Ski Season, Lake Season and Winter Storm Stays

Idaho lodging changes with the calendar. Ski season fills the Wood River Valley in winter, and summer brings boaters and families to Coeur d'Alene, Sandpoint and the shoreline of Lake Pend Oreille. A crowded property helps an investigator blend in but makes vehicles and exits harder to watch, so peak-season assignments often need two investigators. Our Sandpoint lodging investigators work the Bonner County properties on Pacific Time.

Winter creates the opposite problem. At a half-empty roadside motel in January, a single idling car stands out, and snow can force stays nobody planned. Winter weather on US-95 and the I-90 passes can delay travel between north and south Idaho, so a subject who says they were stuck overnight in Grangeville or Lewiston may be telling the truth. We compare the account with the conditions and the observed companion before drawing any conclusion. When the stay is across a state line, our cross-state surveillance planners coordinate the destination coverage.

07Price

What Hotel Surveillance Investigations Cost in Idaho

Hotel coverage is billed at our standard $100 hourly investigative rate, with mileage and travel disclosed before the first shift. An overnight stay usually needs coverage at arrival and again at departure rather than an all-night watch, which keeps the total reasonable. We recommend the windows most likely to answer your question and confirm the scope and price in writing. Our Idaho price list shows every rate.

Naming an unknown companion is a separate item: $102 for a basic records check, $300 for the deep-dive version. Resort towns such as Ketchum and Sun Valley are long drives from Boise, so travel there is quoted separately and up front. Any added hours require your sign-off first, and if the stay turns out to involve a hidden asset or spending question, our asset research team can pick up the money trail. Our Idaho investigator cost guide explains how an honest estimate is built for this kind of assignment.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Can an investigator follow someone into an Idaho hotel?

Into public areas, generally yes. Lobbies, restaurants and bars are open to the public, and an investigator may observe there like any guest. We never enter or look into guest rooms or restricted areas, and we leave immediately if management asks, which keeps the evidence lawful and usable in court.

Will you learn the room number?

We do not ask hotel staff for guest information or pose as anyone to obtain it. Which room a guest occupies is the property's own business record. In a pending case, your attorney can subpoena them under I.R.C.P. 45, and Delator Field Services can coordinate service. Surveillance usually establishes the key facts without the records.

Do you record audio in hotel lobbies or bars?

No. Idaho generally allows a participant to record their own conversation, but our investigators are not part of the subject's conversations, and recording them could violate Idaho Code § 18-6702. We rely on photographs, lawful video of public conduct and detailed written logs, which are usually what attorneys need and what courts find easiest to follow.

Is hotel evidence useful in an Idaho divorce?

It can be. Adultery remains a ground under Idaho Code § 32-603, and fault is a spousal maintenance factor under § 32-705. Hotel spending from community funds may also come up. Most Idaho divorces proceed on irreconcilable differences, so your attorney decides how to use the evidence. Our Idaho infidelity investigation page explains the broader process.

What about Sun Valley and other resort properties?

Resorts have shared lots, shuttles, lodges and several entrances, so we plan exits and vantage points in advance and often assign two investigators in peak season. We follow every house rule and leave any area management asks us to. Travel to the Wood River Valley is quoted separately because of the distance from Boise.

Can you cover a lake hotel in the Panhandle?

Yes. Coeur d'Alene and Sandpoint lodging is busy in summer, with marinas and docks that create extra ways to come and go. We plan for water access as well as parking, log every observation on Pacific Time and adjust coverage around marina and boat traffic. Our Panhandle hotel surveillance team covers Bonner County properties.

How long does hotel surveillance take?

A one-night stay is usually covered in two blocks, one at check-in and one at checkout, each lasting a few hours. A weekend may need several shifts. We recommend the minimum coverage likely to answer your question, confirm the hours and price in writing and report after each shift so you can decide whether to continue.

What if a storm explains the overnight stay?

Sometimes it does. Winter weather on US-95 and the mountain passes can strand travelers between north and south Idaho. We document the stay, the companion if any and the timing, and the report states plainly whether the observed facts fit a weather delay. Our Idaho surveillance overview explains how we handle storm-season files.

Does Idaho license hotel surveillance investigators?

No Idaho agency issues a statewide license for private investigators. Some cities, such as Chubbuck and Coeur d'Alene, regulate investigators or detective agents locally, so current requirements should be confirmed for those cities. Delator Group itself holds a Tennessee private investigation license, and its lodging work in Idaho follows the Tennessee rulebook. Our guide to vetting an Idaho investigator lists what to ask.

What do hotel surveillance investigations cost in Idaho?

We bill $100 per hour, with mileage and travel disclosed in advance. An overnight is normally covered in an evening block and a morning block, not with an investigator awake all night. Optional companion research costs $102 basic or $300 deep-dive. Every figure is on our statewide service pricing page, and the scope is confirmed in writing.
