Quick answer

What can a dating background check in Idaho tell me?

It can confirm whether a person's name, age and city are real, whether they appear in Idaho court indexes for criminal, civil, divorce or protection order cases, and whether they are on the state offender registry. It can also flag patterns common to romance fraud. Research is discreet, and our basic and deep-dive rates are listed in advance.

01Why people call

Why Idahoans Check a New Partner Before Getting Serious

Idaho's population passed two million in the 2025 Census estimate, up more than ten percent since 2020, and a large share of the newcomers settled in Ada and Canyon counties. Fast growth means more people meeting through apps with no shared friends, church or hometown to vouch for them. A partner who says they moved from another state may have a history that Idaho records alone will never show. Our Meridian investigators hear that concern often from Treasure Valley clients who met someone online after relocating themselves.

College towns and military communities add their own patterns. Rexburg, Moscow and Pocatello host large student populations, while Mountain Home Air Force Base brings service members and contractors who rotate in and out of Elmore County. Scammers routinely pose as deployed personnel or traveling professionals because those stories explain why they cannot meet. Our Mountain Home team understands that setting, and a short identity check usually answers the first question within the agreed scope.

02What the report covers

Identity, Court History and Registry Status in One Report

The basic $102 check starts by confirming that the person exists under the name given, with an age and address history that match what you were told. We then search Idaho's public court indexes across all 44 counties, which generally cover cases from 1995 forward, plus courts in any state where the person has lived, which is why we start by confirming prior addresses. Because public Idaho entries omit addresses and identification numbers, we match every hit to at least two identifiers before reporting it. People surprised by what turns up sometimes move next to our unmarried partner investigations.

The Idaho State Police maintains a public sex offender registry, and we check it along with registries in other states tied to the person's history. Divorce cases are handled in the magistrate division, so a pending or recent divorce often appears in the court index under the person's name. The $300 deep-dive check adds employment and education verification, civil litigation detail and a closer review of social media and public sources. For anything beyond records, our Idaho surveillance specialists can confirm what a person does in daily life, lawfully and from public places.

  • Name, age and address history confirmed
  • Criminal, civil, divorce and protection order indexes
  • State and out-of-state offender registries
  • Employment and education checks in the deep-dive level

03Money and fraud

Romance Scams, Crypto Requests and Stolen Photos

Romance fraud follows a script. The match moves the conversation off the dating app quickly, declares strong feelings early, avoids video calls and eventually describes an emergency, an investment opportunity or a customs fee that only you can help with. Requests for gift cards, wire transfers or cryptocurrency are the clearest warning. We have not found an Idaho statute specific to cryptocurrency kiosks, so the practical protection is spotting the pattern before money moves. When it already has, our crypto scam investigations trace where the funds went for counsel and law enforcement.

Many fake profiles use photos lifted from real people. A reverse image search, combined with checks on claimed employers and the details of a person's story, often shows within hours of research whether the identity holds together. Idaho Code § 18-3126 makes it a crime to obtain another person's identifying information without authorization to obtain money or credit, which can apply when a scammer uses a stolen identity. We document what we find in a form that police and banks can use, and for broader fraud patterns, including schemes aimed at older Idahoans, our Idaho scam investigation page explains the $2,000 minimum for full scam cases.

  • Refuses video calls or keeps postponing a meeting
  • Pushes to move off the dating platform
  • Asks for gift cards, wires or crypto
  • Photos appear under other names online

04When contact turns unsafe

When Dating Contact Becomes Harassment or Stalking Under Idaho Law

Under Idaho Code § 18-7906, second-degree stalking generally means a knowing and malicious course of repeated nonconsensual contact that would cause a reasonable person substantial emotional distress or fear. The statute's definition of nonconsensual contact includes following someone or maintaining surveillance on them, including by electronic means. Idaho Code § 18-6710 separately covers harassing electronic communications such as repeated texts or emails, and a second or later offense can be a felony. Clients facing that behavior often need our stalking investigation service more than a background check.

Civil protection is available too. A petitioner can ask the magistrate division for a domestic violence protection order under Idaho Code chapter 39-63, where a hearing is generally set within 14 days and relief can last up to a year. Stalking and harassment orders under § 18-7907 are aimed at conduct within the 90 days before filing. Our Boise investigators preserve messages, call logs and account details in a way that holds up, and when an order needs to be delivered, Delator's Idaho process servers can serve it if you choose a private server rather than law enforcement.

05Children and households

Deeper Checks Before a Partner Spends Time With Your Children

Parents carry a different level of risk. Before a new partner moves in or babysits, the $300 deep-dive check looks harder at protection orders, child-related charges, prior custody disputes and registry status in every state the person has lived. Idaho courts weigh domestic violence as a custody factor under Idaho Code § 32-717, and the joint custody presumption in § 32-717B reverses for a habitual perpetrator. A co-parent may raise a new partner's history in a custody case, so knowing it first protects you. Our custody investigation guide explains how that evidence is used.

We report findings factually and without commentary. If something serious appears, such as an active protection order involving a former partner's children, we tell you directly and suggest you speak with a family law attorney before deciding what to do. When the concern is a former partner rather than a new one, our missing family member service and child-related work operate under stricter planning, because Idaho Code § 18-4506 treats keeping a child from a lawful custodian as a felony in most circumstances.

06Our boundaries

What We Will and Will Not Do in a Dating Investigation

We work only from lawfully available sources: public court records, registries, licensing boards, published information and interviews with people willing to talk. We do not access private accounts, guess passwords, pose as someone to get a person to reveal information or place trackers on anyone's vehicle. Idaho Code § 18-6702 makes intercepting conversations you are not part of a felony, and covert electronic tracking can amount to stalking. Anyone weighing a do-it-yourself approach should first read our Idaho recording law guide.

We also will not run a check meant to locate someone who has cut off contact with you. If a person has asked you to stop reaching out, or has a protection order against you, we decline. A check exists to protect the client, not to help anyone track a former partner. Every request goes through intake questions designed to catch that, and Delator leadership reviews any request that looks unclear. Our guide to choosing an investigator in Idaho explains why responsible firms screen their own clients this way.

  • Public and lawfully obtained sources only
  • No account access, pretexting or trackers
  • No locates for people avoiding contact
  • Leadership review of unclear requests

07Distance and time zones

Long-Distance Relationships Between North and South Idaho

Idaho is long and split by time zones. The Panhandle and the Lewiston-Moscow area run on Pacific Time, while Boise, Twin Falls and eastern Idaho run on Mountain Time, and the drive from Boise to Coeur d'Alene is roughly 380 to 390 miles, much of it on US 95. A partner who lives at the other end of the state is easy to see only on weekends, which leaves plenty of room for a second household or a story that never gets tested. Our Coeur d'Alene office contacts handle verification in the north.

Cross-border relationships are common too. Kootenai County residents date people from Spokane, Lewiston residents cross the river to Clarkston, and eastern Idaho couples often split time with Utah or Wyoming. We search each state where the person has lived within one written scope. When a partner claims a job or home in another city, our out-of-state surveillance team can confirm it in person, and dating background checks in Idaho that span several states are billed at the same rates.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Will the person know I had them checked?

No. A records-based check does not involve contacting the person, their family or their employer. We search public indexes, registries and published information. If you later want interviews or field confirmation, we discuss the added visibility first and get your approval in writing. Reports go only to you, and we do not share a client's name with the subject.

Is it legal to run a background check on someone I am dating in Idaho?

Generally yes, when it relies on public records and lawful sources and is not used to harass or locate someone avoiding you. Consumer-report rules that govern hiring and renting do not usually apply to a personal safety check, but limits on recording, tracking and accessing accounts still do. Our Idaho guide to investigator limits explains them in more detail.

Can you find out if someone is married?

We can look for divorce filings, which Idaho handles in the magistrate division, and for other public signs that a person shares a home or finances with a spouse. Marriage records are not always searchable statewide, and a marriage in another state may not appear in Idaho at all. When records are inconclusive, lawful observation can confirm living arrangements, which our married infidelity service handles.

What if the person has no record at all?

That can be good news, or it can mean the identity is thin or invented. A real adult usually leaves traces such as address history, licenses, court filings or employment records. If someone claims to be in their forties yet barely exists in public records, we flag it. Our report separates a clean history from an identity that cannot be confirmed.

I already sent money. What should I do first?

Stop sending funds, save every message and transaction record, and contact your bank or payment provider right away. Report the fraud to local police and to the FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center. We can then document the scheme and trace funds for counsel. Recovery is never certain, and anyone promising certain recovery for an upfront fee may be running a second scam. See our crypto fraud page for that work.

Does Delator hold an Idaho private investigator license?

There is no Idaho state license for private investigators to hold. A few cities, including Chubbuck and Coeur d'Alene, regulate investigators or detective agents locally, so requirements are confirmed before field work inside those city limits. Delator Group is a licensed Tennessee private investigation firm, insured, and holds itself to Tennessee's licensing standard in every state where it works.

Can you check someone who lives in Washington or Utah?

Yes. Many Idaho relationships cross state lines, especially between Coeur d'Alene and Spokane, Lewiston and Clarkston, and eastern Idaho and northern Utah. We search the courts and registries in each state where the person has lived, and all of it is covered within the same written scope and pricing you approved at the start.

How quickly will I get results?

A basic check usually moves quickly once identity is confirmed, but we do not promise turnaround in hours. Timing depends on how many states are involved and whether a court file needs to be pulled to confirm an entry. If you are meeting someone soon, tell us at intake and we will prioritize the identity and registry pieces first.

What if the report shows something frightening?

We tell you directly, explain what the record means and what it does not mean, and suggest practical next steps. That may include talking to a family law attorney, ending contact in a public place or seeking a protection order. If you need help documenting contact after a breakup, our cyberbullying and harassment service can preserve evidence for a petition.

Can you run a check on someone who blocked me?

No. If a person has cut off contact, asked you to stop reaching out or obtained a protection order, we will not research or locate them. A dating background check exists to protect the person asking, not to reopen contact. We ask screening questions at intake for that reason, and we decline requests that look like an attempt to find someone who does not want to be found.
