Driver identification and locates
Hit-and-Run Driver Locates in Idaho
After an Idaho hit-and-run, the police report comes first. Delator Group then works for the victim, the insurer or the attorney to preserve camera footage before it is erased, trace partial plates and damaged vehicles, find witnesses, and locate the driver so a claim, a suit or service of process can move forward.

Quick answer
Can a private investigator find a hit-and-run driver in Idaho?
Often, if the work starts early. Police handle the criminal case under Idaho Code § 18-8007, but an investigator can request business and residential video before it is overwritten, canvass for witnesses, trace partial plates through lawful sources, and locate a named driver for your claim. Our statewide skip tracing handles the final locate.
01The statute
What Idaho Law Requires of a Driver After an Injury Crash
Idaho Code § 18-8007 generally requires a driver who knows or has reason to know a crash caused injury or death to stop at or near the scene and remain there, give their name, address, insurer and vehicle registration, show a driver's license, and render reasonable aid, including arranging transport to medical care. Leaving without doing so is a felony punishable by up to $5,000 and up to five years, plus a mandatory one-year license revocation with no work permit.
Crashes that damage only property are governed by separate provisions, and your attorney or insurer can confirm which apply. Either way, the police report is the first step: it creates the official record, gets the case into the hands of an officer who can run plates through law enforcement systems, and is usually required by insurers. A Delator hit-and-run investigation runs alongside the police file for the victim, insurer or counsel, and our insurance investigations team often handles the claim side.
02Time-sensitive evidence
Evidence That Disappears Within Days
Most useful evidence in a hit-and-run disappears within days. Many business systems and home doorbell cameras overwrite their footage on a short cycle, debris gets swept away, and witnesses who stopped briefly drive on without leaving their names. We map every camera that may have recorded the vehicle approaching or leaving, from gas stations along I-84 to storefronts near the scene, and send written requests asking owners to preserve the relevant hours, a step our lawful investigator activity guide describes.
Investigators then canvass the area on foot, speaking with nearby businesses, residents and regular commuters and noting exactly what each person saw and when. Paint transfer, broken lens pieces and the damage to your own vehicle can suggest the other vehicle's make, color and damaged side, which narrows the search. Our public-place surveillance work follows the same evidence rules, and our witness background checks help counsel assess the people who come forward.
- Business and doorbell video
- Dashcam clips from other drivers
- Debris, paint transfer and lens pieces
- Names and numbers of every witness
03Identification
From a Partial Plate to a Short List of Vehicles
Victims often remember only part of a plate, a color and a rough make. That can still be enough. We combine the partial plate with the vehicle description, the direction of travel and the time of day, then work through lawful commercial data sources and public records to build a short list of candidate vehicles and registered owners. Federal law restricts access to motor vehicle records, and we use them only for permissible purposes and through proper channels.
A damaged vehicle also has to be repaired somewhere. With counsel's direction, we look at body shops, salvage listings and online parts searches in the area for vehicles matching the damage pattern. When the likely vehicle is found, our report explains the chain of reasoning so police or counsel can confirm it independently. Clients dealing with a repair dispute after the crash can see our auto shop damage investigations and our stolen car investigations for related questions.
04The locate
Owner Versus Driver: Finding the Person Behind the Wheel
Knowing the registered owner is not the same as finding the person who was driving. Owners lend cars, sell them without updating records, or move. We confirm who had the vehicle that day, then find that person's current address, workplace and contact details through public records, lawful fieldwork and, where useful, a debtor-style asset and address trace. The result goes to counsel or the insurer in writing, with each source identified so it can be relied on in a claim or a complaint.
If a lawsuit is filed, the driver must be served. Idaho's civil rule, I.R.C.P. 4, generally allows any adult who is not a party to serve, and a defendant not served within 182 days after the complaint is filed faces dismissal without prejudice. When a driver is avoiding contact, our evasive person locates and the Delator process serving division in Idaho work together so service is documented with logged attempts and a signed affidavit.
05Idaho roads
Interstates, Mountain Grades and Two-Lane Highways
Where a crash happens shapes how we work it. On I-84 through Nampa, Meridian and Boise, traffic volume means more potential witnesses and cameras but also faster turnover of footage. On US-95, the only road connecting the Panhandle with the rest of the state, a fleeing driver has few exits, and grades like White Bird Hill and Lewiston Hill limit where a damaged vehicle can go. Our Meridian investigators and Lewiston investigators know those patterns.
Rural two-lane roads across the Magic Valley and eastern Idaho present the opposite problem: few cameras and long gaps between witnesses. There, we look at farm operations, fuel stops and anyone who travels the route at the same time each day. Winter conditions on the I-90 passes and US-95 add another factor, since snow and ice can explain or complicate damage patterns, and we photograph the scene conditions as soon as possible. Our Twin Falls investigators handle much of the Magic Valley work.
06Insurers and counsel
Supporting Insurers, Adjusters and Injury Counsel
Insurers and injury attorneys use our findings in different ways. An insurer may need to know whether a driver can be identified before resolving an uninsured motorist claim under the victim's own policy, if that coverage exists. Counsel may need the driver located, their insurance confirmed and their account of the day documented. We tailor the report to the purpose, and our civil litigation support for attorneys explains how we coordinate with counsel's strategy rather than run ahead of it.
Deadlines matter. Under Idaho Code § 5-219(4), personal injury and wrongful death actions generally must be filed within two years, and § 5-218 sets a three-year period for injury to personal property. Your attorney must confirm the deadline that applies. Smaller property claims may fit Idaho's small claims department, whose limit was raised to $15,000 in 2026. When a pedestrian or cyclist died, our wrongful death investigations and insurance claim surveillance may become part of the case.
07Our boundaries
Boundaries We Keep When a Driver Has Fled
We do not confront suspected drivers, block vehicles, enter private property to inspect a car, or pose as police. Idaho's trespass statute, § 18-7008, applies to investigators as it does to everyone, and a confrontation can put people at risk and damage a later prosecution. When we believe we have found the vehicle or driver, we tell counsel and, where appropriate, the investigating officer, and we let those with authority take the next step.
We also tell clients early when a case looks unlikely to produce an identification, such as when no camera covered the scene and no witness saw a plate. A short, honest assessment costs far less than open-ended searching, and every engagement is scoped and priced in writing before it starts. Clients who want to understand how investigators are evaluated can read our guide on vetting an investigator in Idaho and our Idaho investigation price list.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Is hit-and-run a felony in Idaho?
When the crash causes injury or death, yes. Idaho Code § 18-8007 makes it a felony for a driver who knows or has reason to know of an injury or death to leave without stopping, identifying themselves and rendering reasonable aid, with up to five years, a fine up to $5,000 and a one-year license revocation. Property-damage crashes are covered by separate provisions.
Who do I call first after a hit-and-run, police or you?
Police first, and 911 if anyone is hurt. The police report creates the official record, starts the criminal investigation and is usually required by insurers. We work alongside it for you, your insurer or your attorney, focusing on evidence that officers may not have time to chase, such as private camera footage and witnesses who left the scene.
How fast do you need to start?
As soon as possible. Many camera systems overwrite footage on short cycles, and witnesses become harder to find each day. If you contact us within the first few days, we can usually send preservation requests before most footage is gone. Cases that start later rely more on vehicle tracing, repair records and the people who regularly travel that route.
Can you run a license plate for me?
Federal law limits access to motor vehicle records, and we use them only for permissible purposes, such as anticipated litigation, through proper channels. Police can run plates directly through law enforcement systems. We combine lawful data sources with the vehicle description and scene evidence to identify candidates, and our report explains the reasoning so counsel or police can verify it.
What if police already know who the driver is?
Then the challenge is often finding the driver for a civil claim or service of a lawsuit. We locate current addresses and workplaces through public records and fieldwork. If the driver avoids contact, our evasive person locates in Idaho and process servers coordinate so service is documented with logged attempts and a signed affidavit.
How long do I have to sue a hit-and-run driver in Idaho?
Generally, Idaho Code § 5-219(4) sets two years for personal injury and wrongful death claims, and § 5-218 sets three years for injury to personal property. Exceptions are narrow and depend on the facts. Your attorney must confirm the deadline for your case, and an early start keeps evidence and witnesses available.
Do you work for insurance companies?
Yes. Insurers and adjusters use our work to identify at-fault drivers, confirm who was driving, document scene evidence and locate witnesses. We also work for victims and their attorneys. Our insurance investigations in Idaho describe how we report to adjusters, with findings sourced so they can support claim decisions or subrogation.
Will you confront the driver?
No. We do not confront suspects, block vehicles or enter private property to look at a car. Confrontation can put people in danger and harm a later criminal case. When we find the likely vehicle or driver, we report to counsel and, where appropriate, the investigating officer, who can take lawful action.
How much does a hit-and-run investigation cost?
Field investigations that require canvassing and tracing start at $1,000, and additional time is billed at $100 per hour within a budget you approve in writing. A remote trace on a known owner or driver costs $102. There is no open-ended retainer, and our hit-and-run and other Idaho rates are published in full.
