Quick answer

Can I hire an investigator if my boyfriend or girlfriend is cheating in Alaska?

Yes. Marriage is not required. An investigator can lawfully watch a partner in public places, identify the people they meet and research public records about them. What the law forbids is the same for everyone: no hidden trackers, no planted recorders, no entering private property. Our partner background research in Alaska is often the first step, starting at $102.

01Why it matters

What Is at Stake When You Are Not Married

Without a marriage there is no divorce case, no marital property division and no spousal maintenance claim, so people sometimes assume the facts do not matter legally. Often they do. Unmarried couples in Alaska share leases and mortgages, co-sign truck loans, run small businesses together and raise children. When one partner is hiding a second relationship, the other may be carrying debt, health risk or a parenting arrangement built on a false picture. Our surveillance investigations across Alaska are designed to give you that picture before you make the next decision.

Some clients simply want certainty before ending a relationship or before moving in, getting engaged or relocating for a partner's job. Others are unsure whether what they have seen is an affair at all. We take both kinds of case, and we will say so when a single records search is likely to answer the question more cheaply than days of fieldwork. A brief consultation with our investigators helps you decide which route fits. If a shared residence or vehicle makes discretion difficult, our statewide Alaska investigations overview explains how we staff sensitive cases.

02The work

What an Unmarried Partner Investigation Documents

Fieldwork focuses on the hours your partner cannot account for. Investigators note departure and arrival times, the vehicles used, the addresses visited and who else is present, and they photograph only what anyone standing in a public place could see. When an unfamiliar person keeps appearing, we can identify them through lawful records research and summarize anything relevant, such as a protective order history, without contacting them. The approach mirrors our Anchorage private investigator practice in every city.

Records work often comes first for engaged couples. A fiancé's prior marriages, civil judgments, bankruptcy filings and criminal court history are frequently public, and a short report can confirm or contradict what you have been told. For a partner met through an app or social media, we also check whether the identity holds together at all; our romance and crypto scam investigators see how often it does not.

  • Movements during the hours in question
  • Addresses visited and how long your partner stayed
  • Identity of a recurring companion, through public records
  • Prior marriages, judgments or court cases on request
  • Time-stamped photographs taken from public places

03Children

Custody When Unmarried Parents Separate in Alaska

Parents who never married still end up in superior court when they disagree about custody. AS 25.20.060 generally lets either parent petition, directs the court to decide on the child's best interests and points it to the factors listed in AS 25.24.150(c), the same list used in divorce. Those factors include the stability of the child's home, each parent's willingness to support the child's relationship with the other, domestic violence and substance abuse that affects the child. Read our guide to custody investigations in Alaska before deciding what to document.

The domestic violence presumption in AS 25.24.150(g) also applies through that cross-reference, so a parent with a qualifying history of violence is presumed not to receive custody. Cheating alone rarely moves a judge. What moves a judge is evidence that a new partner's presence, a party lifestyle or impaired driving is affecting the child. We document that conduct neutrally and work through your lawyer, often alongside our Alaska attorney services. If a child has been taken and kept from you, call counsel and law enforcement first, then see our missing child investigations.

04Shared money

Shared Homes, Loans and Money Between Unmarried Partners

Alaska's divorce property rules do not apply to couples who never married, so disputes over a shared house, a co-signed loan or money one partner advanced to the other are usually argued under ordinary contract and property principles. That makes paper trails important. Under AS 09.10.053, contract claims generally carry a three-year limitation period, and your attorney will want to know early what was promised and what was paid; our civil litigation support for counsel helps organize that record. Our asset investigations for individuals start at a $1,000 minimum and trace property and spending through lawful sources.

Infidelity and money problems often travel together. A partner who is maintaining a second relationship may be paying rent somewhere else, taking trips that do not match their story, or running up credit in joint names. We document the spending you can lawfully see, identify property held in the other person's name and report what it suggests. If a former partner has disappeared with money owed to you, our Alaska skip tracing team can locate them for your attorney.

05Legal limits

Safety, Stalking Law and the Lines We Will Not Cross

Alaska's stalking statute, AS 11.41.270, treats following someone, appearing at their home or work, or monitoring them with a global positioning device as nonconsensual contact when it is unwanted. A course of that conduct that recklessly places a person in fear can be a crime, and first-degree stalking under AS 11.41.260 is a felony. For that reason we screen every unmarried partner case. If a partner has already left and wants no contact, we will not help locate them for a personal confrontation. Our stalking investigations unit helps people who are being watched.

Recording rules are equally firm. AS 42.20.310 generally allows you to record a conversation you are part of, but not to capture your partner's conversations with someone else. If you fear for your safety, AS 18.66.100 lets a victim of domestic violence petition the district or superior court for a protective order against a household member; whether a dating relationship qualifies depends on statutory definitions your lawyer can confirm. See our overview of what investigators may legally do for more.

06Alaska life

Military Postings, Seasonal Work and the Long Dark

Alaska's relationships are shaped by its jobs. Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson is in Anchorage, Fort Wainwright adjoins Fairbanks and Eielson Air Force Base lies about 26 miles southeast of it, so many couples in the Anchorage and Fairbanks areas include a service member who deploys or trains away from home. Seasonal fishing, cannery and lodge work pulls partners to Bristol Bay or Kodiak for weeks at a time. Our North Pole private investigators and Kodiak investigators plan cases around those absences.

Winter shapes the fieldwork as much as the relationship. With only a few hours of daylight in December in much of the state, observation relies on lighting, positioning and patience, and the report notes when darkness limited what could be seen. Many Alaskans also live outside town limits on unlit roads, where a parked vehicle stands out. We adapt shift lengths to those conditions, as our Wasilla investigators do along the Parks Highway.

07Price and trust

What Unmarried Partner Infidelity Investigations Cost

Our standard investigative rate is $100 per hour in Alaska, matching Tennessee. Background research on a partner or a companion is $102 for a basic check and $300 for a deep-dive history, both completed remotely. Field shifts are planned in blocks, usually two or three to start, and any travel to a community off the road system is quoted in writing before it is booked. The Alaska price schedule lists every published rate.

Alaska has no statewide private investigator license, though Anchorage, Fairbanks and Kodiak license private detectives at the city level and we confirm those requirements before working inside their limits. Delator Group is a licensed Tennessee firm, and you should expect from any investigator a written scope, proof of insurance and a clear refusal to do anything unlawful. Our guide to choosing an investigator explains how to compare firms.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Can I hire a private investigator if we are not married?

Yes. Nothing in Alaska law limits investigations to married couples. The same lawful methods apply: observation from public places, public-records research and careful documentation. The difference is in how the evidence is used, since there is no divorce case. Most unmarried clients use the report to make a personal decision, and some use it in a custody or property dispute with help from an attorney.

Does cheating matter in a custody case between unmarried parents?

Usually only if it affects the child. Under AS 25.20.060, custody disputes between parents are generally decided on the child's best interests using the factors in AS 25.24.150(c), and courts focus on facts that directly affect the child. A new partner with a violent history, or conduct that leaves a child unsupervised, can matter. Our custody investigation guide explains what tends to be useful.

Can you check out my fiancé before the wedding?

Yes, and many clients start there. A basic background check is $102 and a deep-dive history is $300. Depending on the person, the report can show prior marriages and divorces, civil judgments, bankruptcies, liens and court cases in Alaska and other states. We use lawful sources only and never contact the person. Our dating and fiancé checks page lists what each level covers.

My partner is in the military. Can you investigate on base?

No. Installations such as Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, Fort Wainwright and Eielson Air Force Base control their own access, and we do not enter them or try to. We can observe lawfully in surrounding communities such as Eagle River, North Pole or Fairbanks, and we can research public records. Questions about military discipline belong with the service member's command or a lawyer familiar with military law.

Can I track my partner's phone or car?

Not without a clear legal right, and often not at all. Alaska's stalking statute, AS 11.41.270, lists monitoring a person with a global positioning device or similar technology, and installing software on their phone, as nonconsensual contact. Sharing a car or phone plan does not settle the question. Delator does not place trackers or monitoring software. Talk to a lawyer before you try either.

How do I know if someone I met online is real?

Signs of trouble include a partner who will not video call, always has a reason not to meet, or asks for money, gift cards or cryptocurrency. We verify identity, check whether photographs belong to someone else and research any business or investment the person mentions. If money has already been lost, our Alaska scam investigation service begins at $2,000 and can support a report to law enforcement.

What if my partner and I share a lease or a loan?

Then the evidence may matter beyond the relationship. Disputes over shared property between unmarried partners are usually argued under contract and property principles rather than divorce statutes, and contract claims in Alaska generally carry a three-year limitation period under AS 09.10.053. Keep your own records, avoid taking documents that are not yours, and ask an attorney before moving money. We can trace property and spending lawfully.

Will my partner find out?

Not from us. We communicate only through the phone, email or attorney you designate, never through shared accounts. Investigators break off a shift if they think they have been noticed, and we never contact your partner or the person they are seeing. In very small communities we may recommend records research first because sustained surveillance is harder to keep discreet there.

What does an unmarried partner investigation cost?

Fieldwork is $100 per hour and most cases begin with two or three shifts. Background research is $102 or $300. Any flight or ferry travel to a community off the road system is quoted in writing before booking. You approve a cap in advance and we report before asking to extend it. The cost guide for Alaska clients explains how we estimate hours.

Do you handle cases outside Anchorage and Fairbanks?

Yes. We assign investigators across the road system, from Homer to Delta Junction, and plan trips to Southeast and western Alaska communities when a case requires it. Some places, such as Juneau, Kodiak or Bethel, can be reached only by air or water, so the travel plan is part of the written quote. Reach Delator directly to talk through where your partner lives and works.
