Quick answer

Can a private investigator help with cyberbullying in Alaska?

Yes. A cyberbullying investigation in Alaska preserves the messages, posts and profiles before they disappear, researches who is behind an anonymous account through lawful sources, and packages the record for a school district, police or counsel. Threats of violence go to 911 first. Our hourly rate is $100 on a scope you approve in writing, shown on our Alaska pricing page.

01Safety first

When Online Harassment Needs Police Before an Investigator

Some messages are not a matter for a private firm at all. A threat to hurt a child, a demand for money in exchange for not sharing intimate images, or talk of self-harm belongs with 911, the local police department or the Alaska State Troopers right away. In a village without a police department, a Village Public Safety Officer may be the first contact. Once the immediate danger is handled, our team can preserve the record and fill in the facts officers asked for, and our stalking investigations in Alaska address cases where online contact has moved into the physical world.

Many families wait too long because the harassment started small. A nickname in a group chat becomes a fake account, then edited photos, then messages at two in the morning. Write down when it began, which apps are involved and who has seen it, a habit our Palmer investigators recommend to every family. Do not confront the suspected sender, and do not delete your own replies, because gaps make a record look selective. If the target is a teenager who has started skipping school or seems to be withdrawing, our missing child investigations team can step in should the young person leave home.

  • Threats of violence: call 911 first
  • Sextortion: do not pay, report it
  • Self-harm messages: get immediate help
  • Keep every message, including your replies

02Alaska law

The Alaska Statutes That Reach Online Harassment

Alaska has no separate crime called cyberbullying, but existing statutes cover much of the conduct. As of the 2025 Alaska Statutes, harassment in the second degree under AS 11.61.120 includes repeatedly sending or posting electronic communications that insult, taunt, challenge or intimidate a person under 18 in a way that places the child in reasonable fear of physical injury. The same section reaches obscene electronic communications and, with exceptions, publishing sexual images of a person. It is generally a class B misdemeanor. Our guide to what Alaska investigators may legally do explains where private work stops.

When the conduct is a pattern that makes someone afraid for their safety, stalking law can apply. Under AS 11.41.270, nonconsensual contact expressly includes electronic communications, monitoring a person with a GPS device or similar technology, and installing software to watch someone through a phone or computer. Second-degree stalking is generally a class A misdemeanor, and AS 11.41.260 raises it to a class C felony in listed situations, such as a victim under 16 or a violated protective order. Charging decisions belong to prosecutors, so we bring the evidence to them through your attorney support team.

03Evidence

Preserving Posts, Messages and Profiles So They Hold Up

Screenshots alone are easy to challenge. A cropped image without a username, a date or the surrounding conversation invites the question of what was left out. We capture each item with its account name, profile link, visible time stamp and the context around it, record when and how it was collected, and keep originals unaltered. Disappearing-message apps and stories that expire in a day need prompt attention, so call before the sender cleans up, or ask our Alaska surveillance and evidence team how quickly we can start. If the material includes images of a minor, we stop, do not copy it and route it straight to law enforcement.

Recording rules matter when phone calls are part of the harassment. Alaska is generally a one-party consent state under AS 42.20.310, so a person can usually record a call they take part in, while recording other people's conversations can be a crime, a class A misdemeanor under AS 42.20.330. Our Alaska guide to recording conversations covers the details. Delator never logs into another person's account, guesses passwords or plants monitoring software, which the stalking statute specifically names.

04Attribution

Working Out Who Is Behind an Anonymous Account

Anonymous accounts often leave patterns. Writing style, posting times, mutual followers, reused photos, usernames carried over from older profiles and references to events only a few people attended can point toward a likely author. We compare those details, much as our witness background checks do, using public and lawfully available information and report our confidence honestly, separating what is confirmed from what is only consistent. That distinction matters in small Alaska communities, where a wrong accusation can damage a family's standing in a school or village for years. Our deep-dive background research methods support this work.

Some answers sit with the platform. Account registration data, login records and IP addresses usually require a subpoena or court order that only counsel or law enforcement can obtain, and platforms keep those logs for limited periods. We help your lawyer by documenting the specific accounts, URLs and dates a request should name, which keeps it narrow enough to be granted. Pricing for that groundwork is the same $100 hourly rate set out in our cost guide for Alaska investigations.

05Schools

Alaska School Districts and Their Bullying Policies

Under AS 14.33.200, every Alaska school district must adopt a policy prohibiting harassment, intimidation and bullying of students, and the model policy distributed through the state education department addresses electronic means such as texts, images and posts. Districts can generally act on off-campus messages when they substantially disrupt school. Alaska's districts range from Anchorage's large urban system to borough districts on the Kenai Peninsula and in Mat-Su to regional districts serving roadless villages. We prepare a short, dated summary that fits the district's complaint process, and our Wasilla investigators often handle Mat-Su cases.

School administrators respond most readily to a record that is organized, calm and specific: who sent what, when, through which app, and how it affected the student's attendance or safety. We avoid speculation about other children's families and keep the summary limited to what the district needs. Where the student and the sender belong to the same small community or tribe, we ask counsel whether a tribal forum or a village council is involved before taking any step. Families on the Kenai can work through our Soldotna private investigators.

  • Dated timeline of each incident
  • Captured posts with usernames and links
  • Attendance or safety effects noted
  • Names limited to what the district needs

06Adult targets

Protective Orders, Civil Claims and Harassment of Adults

Adults are targeted too: by former partners, by neighbors in a long-running dispute, by people angry over a business deal. When the sender is a current or former household member, AS 18.66.100 lets a victim of a domestic violence crime petition the district or superior court for a protective order that can bar contact. Other orders may fit other relationships, and your attorney can advise which applies, as our custody investigations guide notes for parents. We assemble the timeline, captures and witness notes that a petition draws on, and our Anchorage private investigators can attend to local follow-up.

Civil claims are another path. False statements posted about a person can support a defamation claim, and AS 09.10.070 generally gives two years to file claims for libel and slander, though deadlines can turn on facts counsel should review. When the harassment comes from a coworker or supervisor, it can become a workplace issue, and when it targets sex or another protected trait the Alaska Human Rights Act may apply, a question our workplace sexual harassment investigations help counsel answer. In every adult case, we document facts and let the lawyer decide strategy.

07Local context

Small Towns, Long Distances and Exposure Online

Online harassment hits differently in a place where the nearest town may be a flight away. In a community of a few hundred people, the target and the sender may share a school, a church and a store, and a single post can reach everyone. Most of this work is remote, which suits Alaska: captures, account research and timelines cost the same in Utqiagvik as in Juneau. When an interview or a records visit is needed off the road system, travel is quoted in writing first, and our Bethel investigators cover the Yukon-Kuskokwim region.

Alaska Time runs three hours behind Nashville's Central Time, so we note the time zone on every capture and timeline. Delator Group is a licensed Tennessee private investigation firm with no office in Alaska, and Alaska has no statewide investigator license. Anchorage, Fairbanks and Kodiak regulate private detectives locally, so we confirm those requirements before field work inside their limits. When a target's address or phone number has been posted, our personal information removal service works to reduce what remains public, and our vetting guide explains how to choose any investigator.

Statewide coverage

Online Harassment Cases Across Alaska

Captures, account research and timelines are handled remotely at one statewide rate, so a family in Kotzebue pays the same as one in Midtown Anchorage. When an interview or school meeting needs a person in the room, we assign it through our Fairbanks investigators for the Interior, the Juneau team for Southeast, and our Kenai private investigators for the central peninsula. Delator leadership reviews every report before it is released to a family or a lawyer, and the Alaska investigations hub lists the communities we work in.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is cyberbullying a crime in Alaska?

There is no crime with that name, but the conduct is often covered. As of the 2025 Alaska Statutes, AS 11.61.120 makes certain repeated electronic communications that intimidate a person under 18 harassment in the second degree, and AS 11.41.270 treats electronic contact as part of stalking. Whether a case is charged is up to police and prosecutors. We document the facts so they can decide.

Should I block the person who is harassing my child?

Capture first, then block. Before blocking or reporting an account, save the profile page, the username, the messages and the dates, because a blocked or deleted account can take the evidence with it. If you have already blocked, the material may still exist on your child's device or in a friend's chat, and we can often recover a usable record from those sources.

Can you find out who runs a fake account?

Often we can identify a likely author through lawful comparison of writing style, posting times, images and connections, and we tell you how confident we are. Definitive registration data usually requires a subpoena to the platform. Our Alaska attorney services prepare the details counsel needs to request it before the platform's logs expire.

Will the school act on messages sent outside school hours?

It can. Alaska law requires every district to have a harassment, intimidation and bullying policy, and districts generally may address off-campus electronic conduct that substantially disrupts school. A clear, dated summary helps administrators see the disruption. We keep the summary factual and limited, and we do not contact other families on our own.

Is it legal to record the harassing phone calls?

Generally yes, if you are a party to the call. Alaska's eavesdropping statute is usually read as a one-party consent rule, so you may record a conversation you take part in. Recording calls between other people is a different matter. Read our recording guide for Alaska and ask counsel if you are unsure.

My ex keeps messaging me after I asked them to stop. What can I do?

Keep every message and note the dates you asked for no contact. Repeated unwanted contact can support a stalking report or, between household members, a domestic violence protective order petition under AS 18.66.100. We assemble the record for counsel, and our stalking team can assess whether the contact has moved offline.

Do you handle sextortion cases?

Report sextortion to police or troopers immediately and do not pay or send more images. We do not collect or copy intimate images of anyone, and we never handle material involving a minor. After the report, we can help an adult client document the account and contact pattern and reduce what personal information remains exposed online.

What does a cyberbullying investigation cost in Alaska?

Time is billed at $100 per hour against a written estimate you approve, and many cases begin with a short block of capture and timeline work. A deep-dive background check on an identified sender is $300, and our exposure-reduction service is $900. Every published rate appears on the Alaska service pricing page.

Do you work in villages off the road system?

Yes. Most cyberbullying work is remote, so location rarely changes the cost. When someone must travel for an interview or meeting, we quote the flights and time in writing first. Where tribal members or village matters are involved, we ask counsel which forum applies and respect the community's rules about access.

Are Alaska private investigators licensed?

There is no state license for investigators in Alaska. Anchorage, Fairbanks and Kodiak license private detectives at the city level, and we confirm current local rules before field work in those places. Delator Group holds a Tennessee investigation firm license and applies that standard everywhere. Our guide to vetting an Alaska investigator lists questions to ask.
