Private Investigators in Idaho by City

Choose your community to see which courts hear local cases, what Idaho requires of investigators and how Delator Group handles investigations there, with the scope and price in writing first.

Licensing

How Idaho Licenses Private Investigators

Idaho has no statewide licensing program for private investigators. A 1998 bill that would have created a state licensing board, House Bill 770, was referred to committee and went no further. Some cities fill the gap. Chubbuck licenses private investigators and investigator agencies under its city code, with state and FBI fingerprint checks, and Coeur d'Alene licenses security agencies and agents. Delator Group is a licensed Tennessee private investigation firm and holds its Idaho casework to Tennessee's licensing standard.

Because there is no state license to look up, a client should vet the firm directly. Check that the business is registered and in good standing, ask for proof of liability insurance and for references from attorneys or past clients, and get the scope and price in writing before work starts. If the work will happen inside Chubbuck, Coeur d'Alene or another city with local rules, ask how those rules are being met.

Courts

How Idaho Courts Are Organized

Idaho's trial courts are the district courts, organized into seven judicial districts that cover all 44 counties. Each district court has a magistrate division. District judges hear felonies and civil actions over $10,000. The magistrate division hears civil actions up to $10,000, misdemeanors, felony preliminary hearings, small claims, probate, evictions, juvenile cases and family law, including divorce and child custody. The Supreme Court and the Court of Appeals sit in Boise.

FAQ

Questions About Finding an Investigator in Idaho

Which Idaho communities have their own page?

Every incorporated Idaho city, town or village with more than 3,000 residents, plus every township or town government of that size, has its own page here, 51 in all. Smaller places are covered by the nearest page and the statewide guide.

Does Delator Group work directly in Idaho?

Yes. Delator Group is a licensed Tennessee private investigation firm and handles Idaho investigations itself, with the scope and price in writing first. Idaho does not issue a statewide private investigator license.

Does Idaho license private investigators?

Idaho issues no state license to private investigators, but some cities license them locally, including Chubbuck and, through its security agency rules, Coeur d'Alene.

How do I vet an investigator in Idaho?

Confirm the firm's business registration, insurance and references, ask whether a city license applies where the work happens, and get a written engagement with scope and price.

Is Idaho a one-party or two-party consent state?

Idaho is generally a one-party consent state. Idaho Code 18-6702(2)(d) allows a communication to be recorded when one party to it has given prior consent. Recording a conversation that no party has agreed to can be a felony under the same section, and an attorney can confirm how the rule applies to your situation.
