How Wisconsin Licenses Private Investigators

Wisconsin licenses private detectives at the state level through the Department of Safety and Professional Services, often called DSPS. The governing law is Wis. Stat. Section 440.26, with detailed rules in chapters SPS 30 to 35 of the administrative code. DSPS issues separate credentials to individual private detectives and to private detective agencies, and it runs state and federal criminal records checks on applicants. A person with an unpardoned felony conviction cannot hold the credential.

For a client, the key point is that Wisconsin uses two layers. An individual detective must be employed by a licensed agency to renew and keep working, so a detective working entirely alone with no agency behind them is a warning sign. Both credentials can be checked in the DSPS LicensE public lookup, and the names and numbers should match the contract you sign.

Courts

How Wisconsin Courts Are Organized

Wisconsin has a single level of general trial court, the circuit court, with at least one branch in each county. Circuit courts hear civil and criminal cases, including family, probate, juvenile and traffic matters. A few counties share judges: Buffalo and Pepin share one, Florence and Forest share one, and Menominee County cases are handled by judges based in Shawano. Many cities and villages also run municipal courts for local ordinance violations. The 72 counties are grouped into judicial administrative districts.
