How Indiana Licenses Private Investigators

Indiana regulates investigators under Indiana Code 25-30-1 and the board rules at 874 IAC 1. The Private Investigator and Security Guard Licensing Board works through the Indiana Professional Licensing Agency, which processes applications and posts license records. Indiana licenses the private investigator firm, so the license belongs to the business. Firms must also carry the insurance required by IC 25-30-1-15.

For a client, the record to check is the firm license. The investigator assigned to your case usually works under that firm rather than holding a separate personal license. The state's license search shows whether a firm's license is active, so confirm that the firm on your contract is the same firm on the license.

Courts

How Indiana Courts Are Organized

Indiana's trial courts are mainly circuit courts and superior courts. Every county has a circuit court, and a few small counties share one. Most counties also have one or more superior courts, and the two usually split felonies, civil cases, divorce, custody, probate and juvenile matters between them. St. Joseph County has a separate probate court. Some cities and towns run city or town courts for traffic and minor offenses, and Marion County has township small claims courts.
